Integrating Science and Islam, Mathematics Study Programs of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and UIN Suska Riau Successfully Hold Mathematics Webinar Series 13

The Mathematics Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Mathematics Study Program, FST UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim (Suska) Riau, successfully organized the Mathematics Webinar Series 13 of the Deans Forum of FST PTKIN (State Islamic Higher Education Institutions) virtually via Zoom Meeting on Tuesday (29/09/2026). The webinar, themed "The Role of Mathematics in Islamic Perspective: From Theory, Contribution, to Application," was attended by lecturers and students from various PTKIN across Indonesia. The event was hosted by MC Linggar Utami, S.Mat., and moderated by Hamid Wanendra, S.Mat., Gr., a Master’s student in Mathematics at UIN Sunan Kalijaga and a mathematics teacher at SMP Negeri 3 Banguntapan.

In her welcoming speech, the Dean of FST UIN Suska Riau, Dr. Yuslenita Muda, S.Si., M.Sc., expressed her appreciation for the collaboration. She emphasized the crucial role of mathematics in the development of science, technology, and decision-making rooted in Islamic values. She hoped that this event would broaden the participants' horizons and foster joint research and publication efforts. A similar sentiment was shared by the Dean of FST UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Dr. Hj. Khurul Wardati, M.Si., who stressed the importance of integrating science and Islamic principles so that PTKIN graduates are not only academically excellent but also possess noble character and benefit society. Prof. Khurul also encouraged follow-up initiatives such as lecturer and student exchanges as well as joint research projects.

The event was officially opened by the Chairman of the Deans Forum of FST PTKIN, Dr. Muhammad Isnaini, S.Ag., M.Pd. In his opening address, he stated that mathematics has become the primary language of digital civilization—spanning artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cryptography, and quantum computing. "Mathematics at FST PTKIN needs to be brought out of the classroom to address real societal challenges. The core identity (DNA) of Islamic higher education institutions must be present, where scientific advancement and algorithms go hand in hand with ethics, Islamic values, and human well-being," emphasized Dr. Muhammad Isnaini. He also advised students not to fear mathematics and to view the discipline as a tool to train logical, systematic, critical, and objective thinking.

The first keynote presentation was delivered by Fitri Aryani, M.Sc., a mathematics expert from UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. She presented the topic Implementation of Neutrosophic Z-Number (NZN) COPRAS in Halal Food Supplier Selection. Fitri explained that NZN is an extension of fuzzy set theory capable of handling uncertainty and accommodating an expert's level of confidence (reliability) in their assessment. In a case study utilizing the NZN-based Complex Proportional Assessment (COPRAS) method for halal supplier selection, linguistic evaluations were processed without losing structural information up to the final stage. "NZN is not merely an added value, but an integrated information structure that impacts objective decision-making processes," she explained.

In the second session, the Head of the Master’s Program in Mathematics at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Dr. Muhammad Farhan Qudratullah, S.Si., M.Si., delivered a presentation titled Dialogue Between Mathematics and Islamic Finance: Speculation in the Islamic Stock Market.

Dr. Farhan highlighted the dynamics of the Islamic stock market, which is characterized by high risk and high return. He formulated a model to measure speculation levels in stocks based on a modified Value at Risk (VaR) framework with Cornish-Fisher expansion. Utilizing data from the Jakarta Islamic Index (JII) from 2018 to 2023, the model categorized stocks into four groups: speculation-free, low speculation, moderate speculation, and high speculation. "The research findings indicate that the high-speculation group actually yielded negative returns (high risk, low/negative return). This mathematical model is expected to serve as a practical guideline for investors to avoid 'pump-and-dump' stocks (saham gorengan) and to be proposed as an addition to Islamic stock screening criteria in Indonesia," Dr. Farhan explained.

The Q&A session was interactive, featuring questions from participants, including international scholars. Responding to a question on the relationship between neutrosophic logic and AI, Fitri Aryani clarified that neutrosophic logic is not intended to replace AI/machine learning, but rather to enrich and modernize the input data processing layer. Meanwhile, Dr. Farhan offered practical advice for young investors and emphasized the vast research opportunities in mathematics and statistics within the Islamic finance sector.

The webinar concluded with closing statements from both speakers, a summary by the moderator, and a virtual photo session. Through this event, the FST PTKIN collaboration is expected to continue growing through research networks, joint publications, curriculum development, and academic exchanges to advance STEM education grounded in Islamic values across Indonesia.
