Fun Math Initiative: Mathematics Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Conducts Community Service and Mathematics Quiz Competition at MTsN 9 Gunungkidul

The perception of mathematics as a complicated and intimidating subject is gradually fading from the classrooms of MTsN 9 Gunungkidul. Through a community service program entitled “Fun Math,” a team from the Mathematics Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, directly engaged with Grade 9 students to encourage them to view mathematics from a more positive and enjoyable perspective.

The activity was specifically designed to help shift students’ mindsets and demonstrate that mathematics can be learned in an engaging, communicative, and relatable way. It also aimed to eliminate the stigma that mathematics is a frightening subject by presenting mathematical concepts through interactive and enjoyable activities.

The program began with a presentation of learning materials followed by mathematics games utilizing modern interactive technology. The lecturers and students involved in the program made use of a modern digital quiz platform, making the learning session highly interactive. Rather than simply memorizing formulas, the students were encouraged to understand mathematical concepts through engaging logic-based games.

The highlight of the event was the Mathematics Quiz Competition. The students were divided into several teams, such as Team A, Team B, and Team C, and competed against one another in terms of speed and accuracy in solving mathematical problems.

The classroom atmosphere became lively with enthusiastic cheers from classmates as each team competed to raise their hands and provide the best answers. Through this team-based competition, the students not only sharpened their computational skills but also developed teamwork, courage to participate, and confidence in solving problems.

The event concluded with the presentation of appreciation and special prizes to the winners of the quiz competition by representatives of the community service team. The students’ cheerful expressions were evident during the group photo session with the academic community of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and representatives of MTsN 9 Gunungkidul.

Through this community service collaboration, it is hoped that a lasting interest in mathematics will continue to grow among the Grade 9 students, encouraging them to become more optimistic and enthusiastic in preparing for examinations and pursuing their next level of education.
