Student Activity Units

Student Activity Unit or commonly known as Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM) is a student organization that is a gathering place for students with similar interests, talent development, creativity, and orientation of extracurricular activity distribution activities on campus. Student organizations such as UKM are an important component in supporting student activities. In addition to honing character, and social sensitivity, student organizations also play a role in the process of developing soft skills to become professionals in their fields. UKMs at UIN Sunan Kalijaga are very diverse, ranging from the fields of music, cinematography, theater, sports, language development and leadership.

There are 22 UKM at the university level and 60 UKM at the Faculty level spread across UIN Sunan Kalijaga, which can be used by students to develop their interests and talents. UKMs at the University level include the following:

1. Jamaah Cinema Mahasiswa (JCM)

Jama'ah Cinema Mahasiswa or commonly abbreviated as JCM is a student activity unit that accommodates student interests, talents, and creativity in the field of Audio Visual Works, especially FILM. JCM was established on October 29, 1993 right on the student oath day which was marked by the official awarding of the Su'alik Cup for the first time to the famous director Eros DJarot through his film Nyoman Jadi President. Other film directors who received the Su'alik Award were Yudi Subrata with his film Badut-Badut Kota, and Nano Riantorno with Cemeng 2005. Although JCM was established in 1993, it only became an UKM in 1997 when the Head of the University Student Senate was Abdur Rozaki. The agenda in JCM in one year includes the following: Film Camp, Workshop Production, Film School, Training film production, Kalijaga Cinema, Some film productions that have been produced by JCM, especially from 2012 are DJADAB, DANDELION, MAGERSARI, ROSE, KAMBOJA, etc.

JCM has given birth to many talented young filmmakers, many of the JCM alumni have now opened PH (production house) and certainly produced excellent works as well, and not a few have joined professional PH in Indonesia. One of them has also participated in the production of feature films with L.A Indie Movie and produced an omnibus film entitled “Isyarat”.

2. Foreign Language Study and Development/Studi dan Pengembangan Bahasa Asing (SPBA)

Foreign Language Study and Development (SPBA) is an UKM that is engaged as a developer of foreign language skills of UIN Sunan Kalijaga students. The foreign languages developed in SPBA are Arabic, English, and French. These three languages are important to develop the potential of those who have a strong desire to learn foreign languages as well as making them the main tool for continuing their studies abroad.

3. Eska Theater

ESKA Theater is a continuation of the Ushuluddin Art Group (led by Babe Rahmatullah, Dedi Hilman Harun, Sholihin Watimena, Fahruddin Pasya etc.). ESKA is the phonological acronym of Sunan Kalijaga. So the mention of ESKA Theater is the same as saying Sunan Kalijaga Theater. In 1980, the ushuluddin art group joined Khusnul Muharrom (Cak Ayom, Fak Adab), Sunu Andi Purwanto (Sunu AP, Fak Tarbiyah), Sumanto (Fak. Ushuluddin), As'ad Abu Hasan (Fak. Sharia) etc. dissolved KSU and established an art institute under the name TATER ESKA. The establishment of the ESKA theater was marked by the performance of the drama “Returning Consciousness” on October 18, 1980. The establishment of the ESKA theater was also supported by young lecturers (at that time) such as Bahrum Bunyamin, Taufik A Dardiri, and senior lecturers such as Muin Umar and Zaini Dahlan.

4. TAEKWONDO

Initially at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Taekwondo was only an “Activity Configuration” under UKM ORSENI. Realizing that Taekwondo is one of the channels for channeling student interests, talents and potential as well as a place for creativity both in achievement and organization, there was finally a collective awareness and aspiration to make Taekwondo an UKM, so that on April 01, 1999 this UKM was officially established which is directly affiliated with the Institute now University.

5. Student Choir “Gita Savana”

Gita Savana is a student organization located at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta which is engaged in choral arts. Initially, this UKM was part of UKM Orseni (Sports and Arts) under the name Keluarga Besar Paduan Mahasiswa (KBPSM) IAIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. After three years of KBPSM's journey and two changes in management, KBPSM finally changed its status to a separate UKM and became PSM (Student Choir).

6. UKM PRAMUKA

The Scout Movement of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta is one of the Student Activity Units (UKM) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and is also an intra-campus organization that is free from political elements. In addition, the Scout Movement in Higher Education also has more advantages, because in it members are required to be able to practice the Tri Bina Scout Movement, namely Self-Cultivation, Unit Development and Community Development so that the development of reason, intellect, and service to society can be balanced. The UIN Sunan Kalijaga Scout Movement as a coaching forum stands with the name of the racana, namely Racana Sunan Kalijaga for the male racana with the cluster number 03.071 and Racana Nyi Ageng Serang for the female racana with the cluster number 03.072. The form of scout SME activities always practices the Tribina of the Scout Movement and Tri Bina Perguruan Tinggi.

7. UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA SPORTS UKM

UKM Sports was formed as an appreciation of the importance of facilitating students in the field of Sports in the context of fostering talents and interests as well as the formation of athletes in the field of Sports within UIN Sunan Kalijaga. There are five sports, namely Soccer, Badminton, Table Tennis, and Volleyball, and Futsal. In addition to these five sports, UKM Sports also accommodates the talents and interests of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta students, namely the Chess branch as a management work program at that time.

8. UKM ORKES GAMBUS AL-JAMIAH

Gambus music art began to be popular in Indonesia since the early 1960s with the nuances of a blend of middle eastern music colors. With the concept of a campus that develops religion-based science, UIN Sunan Kalijaga has encouraged its students in empowerment to develop arts that are closely related to Islamic nuances. UKM Orkes Gambus (O.G) Al-Jamiah UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta consists of 3 (three) divisions, namely: Gambus Division, Qosidah Division and Malay Orchestra Division.

9. MENWA

Student Regiment (MENWA) Unit 03 Sunan Kalijaga is a forum for the participation of youth, especially students, in state defense efforts as an implementation of the 1945 Constitution article 30 paragraphs 1 and 2 which are utilized in Sishankamrata as a component of trained people.  The existence of MENWA with its specific characteristics as fighters and thinkers, is very useful in supporting the stability and dynamism of campus life. UKM Student Regiment Unit 03 Sunan Kalijaga has a Circular of the Ministry of Education Directorate General of Higher Education No. 2081 / D / T / 2000 concerning the empowerment of MENWA in universities and SKB three ministers and regional autonomy of RI dated October 11, 2002 No. KB/14 / M / X / 2002, No. 6 / U / KB / 2002 and No. 39A of 2000 concerning the empowerment of MENWA in Higher Education.

10. UKM MAPALASKA

MAPALASKA (Student Nature Lovers of UIN Sunan Kalijaga) is one of the Student Activity Units (UKM) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta which plays a role in the field of tourism and community development and environmental studies for environmental defense. It was established on February 27, 1981 under the name MAPALA SUKA (Sunan Kalijaga Nature Lovers Students) at the top of Mount Lawu. In further development, the name MAPALA SUKA was then replaced with MAPALASKA UIN Sunan Kalijaga which also means the same thing, on the basis that it is more familiar to hear and was determined at the IV Member Conference (MUSYTA).

11. KSR PMI Unit VII UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta

IAIN (now UIN) first inscribed its name in the PMI Branch of Kota Madya Yogyakarta (now Yogyakarta city) starting in 1988. From year to year there is an increase in the number of members from IAIN that allows it to be formed into a group. Finally, in 1992 a team of founders was formed. The team submitted a proposal for the establishment of the Indonesian Red Cross Volunteer Corps Student Activity Unit (UKM KSR PMI) to the Student Senate of the Institute (SMI). Not only is the proposal sufficient, but it must be completed with the signatures of 8 existing UKMs at IAIN Sunan Kalijaga. As the spearhead of the Indonesian Red Cross volunteers and the VII Unit of KSR PMI Yogyakarta City as well as an intra-campus institution of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, KSR PMI strives to provide the best service to UIN Sunan Kalijaga students and the general public.

12. KORDISKA

As an effort to continue the development of the Sunan Kalijaga model of Islamic da'wah that uses a cultural approach in Islamic transformation, the Sunan Kalijaga Islamic Da'wah Corps (KORDISKA) was also formed as a Student Activity Unit of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta which was born on November 19, 1989. Its birth was initiated by the BPKM Community Service Activity Coordination Unit (UKKPM). As a student activity unit, KORDISKA's orientation is directed at capturing student aspirations and providing alternative solutions to community problems in various forms of real activities, and ultimately being able to create a conducive, scientific and dynamic climate towards diversity in society. Therefore, the priority of its activities is placed on efforts to improve intellectuality and professionalism in the field of da'wah by strengthening Islamic discourse and managerial skills of its cadres. The programs carried out include conducting trainings, da'wah rhetoric skills, and cooperation to assist community activities.

13. KOPMA UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA

The idea of establishing Kopma IAIN emerged in 1982. At that time Muhammad Iqbal Tuasikal with Rini Indriati attended training for prospective administrators of youth / student cooperatives organized by Dekopinwil Division of Young Generation DIY Province in Kaliurang. After that, based on the idea of the need to fulfill the needs and common welfare among students, especially in the teaching and learning process, the founding team of Kopma IAIN was formed. Armed with the spirit and high idealism of the team, a formation meeting was held on November 24, 1982. This meeting was attended by about 22 students who also became the first members and witnessed by Dekopinwil DIY officials Drs. Subawanto and IAIN Rector Prof. H. Zaini Dahlan, MA. At that time successfully established the Articles of Association and House of Representatives as well as the Management and Supervisors of the first period.
