Mathematics as a scientific discipline has developed since ancient times in various civilizations, including the Islamic civilization. During the golden age of Islam in medieval times, Muslim scientists made great contributions to various fields of science, including mathematics. They translated Greek and Indian classics into Arabic, contributed new knowledge, and developed new techniques in mathematics.
At UIN Sunan Kalijaga, the historical foundation of the Mathematics Study Program includes tracing the development of mathematics in Islamic civilization, such as the contributions of famous Muslim scientists such as Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Kindi, and Ibn al-Haytham. In addition, it may also include the development of mathematics in the local Indonesian context, such as the unique Javanese numeral system.
In addition, the historical foundation of the Mathematics Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga may also consider the relationship between mathematics and Islam, including mathematical concepts found in the Qur'an and Hadith and the use of mathematics in falak science (Islamic astronomy). However, for more specific information, it would be best to contact staff or lecturers at UIN Sunan Kalijaga who have a more in-depth knowledge of the curriculum and focus of study in their mathematics program.
